Mayon Volcano - It's not over yet
By Donna K. Delfin

07/27/01 - The Mayon volcano eruption Thursday displaced some 25,000 residents, officials said on Thursday.

Villages near the Mayon volcano were slowly coming back to life as farmers tentatively returned to fields at the mountain's foot despite warnings following a series of violent explosions. However, everyone is keeping a wary eye on the still rumbling volcano

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) called on authorities to evacuate people living within seven kilometers around Mayon that sent a huge of plume of ash into the air and spewed deadly lava.

Volcanologists say a new eruption could come any time after three blasts yesterday that belched ash clouds 10 kilometres high and jetted lava 60 metres into the air.

Life has not been the same since Mayon Volcano started erupting again. The way of life for many families has been disrupted.

"Life in Matanag is like this," said Restituto Belga, a 71-year-old man tending to his home and his four-year-old granddaughter in the village in the danger zone.

"We run, then we return. We run, then we return."

I am afraid to lose my livestock," Arturo Baria, 64, told French news agency AFP.

"I have a water buffalo and a cow. I can't afford to leave them. If it really erupts and we can see there is a lot of smoke, then we will leave but after two hours, if the eruption stops, we will come back," he said
